The Waaigat development

Curaçao Ports Authority (CPA) held a presentation last Wednesday, October 31, about the development of the Waaigat area. The Minister of Economic Affairs, Mr. Steven Martina, opened the morning mentioning that there are quite a few projects in the commencement phase and that it’s exactly these type of projects that contribute to the improvement of our economy.
Mr. Humberto de Castro, CEO of CPA, followed by giving an ample explanation on the reason why it is important to develop the Waaigat area in a balanced manner, to add value to our historic heritage in Willemstad.
For the presentation a speaker from abroad was invited as well, in the person of Mr. Scott Lagueux, Director of, Waterfront Planning Moffatt & Nichol, a company located in the United States, who has years of experience in the area of maritime (property) development. Mr. Lagueux explained during his presentation how many attractions and activities can be undertaken in and around the Waaigat area, like is done in other countries around the world for years already.
Mr. Raul Manotas, CCO of CPA, gave an explanation about the list of guidelines approved by the government regarding the development of the Waaigat area.
There were also presentations by Mrs. Zarja Garmers of the Ministry of Traffic, Transportation and Urban Planning, who gave an outline on the construction guidelines within the Waaigat area, and by Mr. Ramon Koffijberg (Director of Cinex) and Mr. Marcos Cova (Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce of Curaçao) on the investment possibilities in Curaçao.
Investors from abroad, like Panama and Venezuela, were also present during the presentations, which they followed with great interest.
The Minister of Traffic, Transportation and Urban Planning, Mrs. Zita Jesus-Leito, closed the morning indicating that she is pleased with these type of projects and that she will continue to work together with the other Ministries and CPA in order to keep on moving forward in the development of our down town area.
